Senior Associate Dr. Haris Tabakovic Coauthors Article on Machine Learning in the Strategic Management Journal

Brattle Senior Associate Dr. Haris Tabakovic has coauthored an article on machine learning for the Strategic Management Journal with Jaeho Choi and Dr. Anoop Menon.

The article, “Using Machine Learning to Revisit the Diversification-Performance Relationship,” examines the relationship between corporate diversification and firm performance using natural language processing (NLP), a machine learning technique. Along with discussing the application of topic modeling, a widely used NLP technique, the article also introduces a novel methodology to quantify and measure diversification across multiple dimensions by incorporating human judgement into the interpretation of machine-learned patterns. The authors explore how this methodology can inform important strategic decisions related to firms diversifying their business activities across products, industries, or geographic markets.
