In Memoriam: Brattle Co-Founder William “Bill” Tye
It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Co-Founder William “Bill” Tye in late July 2022. Bill was a valued friend and colleague who was instrumental in creating The Brattle Group. Although he retired from Brattle in 2008, Bill’s legacy endures in Brattle’s dedication to producing work of uncompromising quality in a culture of collaboration and caring.
Bill taught economics at the United States Air Force Academy before transitioning to consulting. In 1990, he and his fellow Brattle co-founders decided to create the firm they had all been looking for but hadn’t been able to find. That firm was The Brattle Group, featuring independent analyses unswayed by client opinions, a positive internal culture with a “no sharks” mentality, and a commitment to growing the next generation and having fun with colleagues who shared their excitement for the firm’s work.
Clients and staff who worked with Bill recognized that he was a “character” in the best sense of the word. He had a story for every occasion and mastered the art of making every project he worked on sound like the most interesting work on the face of the planet. He was smart, charming, full of energy, and completely committed to making Brattle successful. He was extremely proud of the firm he helped to create and the success of the people who came behind him.
Bill leaves behind his wife Dudley, his two adult children John and Caroline, and several generations of grateful colleagues who will miss him dearly.
