Pablo Ruiz Presents on Transmission Topology Optimization at ESIG Spring Technical Workshop
Brattle Senior Consultant Pablo Ruiz presented at the Energy Systems Integration Group (ESIG) 2019 Spring Technical Workshop, held on March 20, 2019 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Dr. Ruiz and Jay Caspary, Southwest Power Pool (SPP) Director of Research, Development and Tariff Services, discussed the results of a transmission topology optimization pilot conducted by SPP Operations. Topology optimization identifies transmission system reconfigurations to route power flow around congested or overloaded lines and transformers.
The presentation highlighted case studies evaluated during the pilot in which simple switching actions of existing assets eliminated costly transmission congestion and renewable generation curtailments by routing power to alternative paths with lower utilization.
