Brattle principal Peter Fox-Penner recently participated in the Annual Texas Renewables Energy Industries Association (TREIA) Conference, held in Lost Pines, TX from December 10-13, 2012.
Dr. Fox-Penner presented on the “Building Blocks and Foundations for a Smart, Low-Carbon Grid.” In his presentation, Dr. Fox-Penner gives an overview of the electric power industry, the growth of renewable energy in recent years, and the challenges that arise as more and more of this energy is introduced to the power grid. He also identifies the specific opportunities and challenges presented by integrating intermittent renewable power such as wind and solar, given that the power grid must constantly balance supply and demand. He discusses four approaches for balancing the grid - through large-scale storage, via diversity in power, with generation, and via smart grids and demand response.
Dr. Fox-Penner’s full presentation, “The Smart, Low Carbon Grid,” is available to watch here.
